2.2.6_II_Small LITHIUM ION BATTERIES PACKED WITH EQUIPMENT (including lithium polymer batteries) Small batteries excepted UN 3481 Applies to: Lithium ion batteries packed with equipment with a Watt-hour rating of not more than 100 Wh/cell Equipment” means device or apparatus for which the lithium cells or batteries will provide electrical power for its operation UN No., Proper Shipping Name UN 3481, LITHIUM ION BATTERIES PACKED WITH EQUIPMENT Class 9 Packing Group Not assigned Hazard Label Labels must be in the form of a square set at an angle of 45° (diamond-shaped) with minimum dimensions of 100 mm by 100 mm; except for air transport mode, labels dimensions may be reduced not less then 30mm by 30mm on small packages. • They must have a line 5 mm inside the edge and running parallel with it. Prerequisite • Batteries must meet the General Requirements of §173.185(a) in particular the test requirements Transport mode Road Marine Air Passenger Aircraft Cargo Exemption conditions 173.185(c) SP 188 PI 966 section II Lithium ion cells should be offered for transport at a State of Charge (SoC) ≤ 30 % of their rated capacity Batteries must be protected so as to prevent short circuits, including protection against contact with conductive materials within the same packaging that could lead to a short circuit. Batteries must be packed in inner packagings that completely enclose the cell. The inner packagings must be packed in strong outer packagings Package may not contain more batteries than the minimum number required to power the equipment plus two spares Packaging Drums, Jerricans, Boxes; not required UN approved packaging Use strong outer packaging, it must be capable of withstanding a 1.2 m drop test in any orientation without damage to batteries contained therein, without shifting of the contents so as to allow cell to cell contact and without release of contents. Two possible solutions, lithium ion batteries must: • be placed in inner packagings that completely enclose the battery, then placed in a strong outer packaging; or • be placed in inner packagings that completely enclose the battery, then placed with equipment in a strong outer packaging The equipment must be secured against movement within the outer packaging. For each package of lithium ion batteries or the completed package a stacking test (3m height for 24 hours) is required. Weight limit No Limit No Limit 5 kg Net 5 kg Net Marking and Labelling of Packages Li Batt Mark minimum dimensions: 100 × 100 mm, for small packages reduced to 100 mm × 70 m, Overpack OVERPACK + same labels as above OVERPACK + same labels as above OVERPACK + same labels as above Restriction: see § 1.9.3 Documents Transport document is not required Transport document is not required Shipper’s Declaration is not required The words “Lithium ion batteries in compliance with Section II of PI 966” must be included in “Nature and Quantity of Goods” box of the air waybill. International Transport Regulations Small Excepted Lithium battery mark Applicable until 31.12.2026 Applicable from 1.1.2023 Lithium battery mark A rectangle or a square of minimum dimensions 100 x 100 mm and the minimum width of the hatching shall be 5 mm. The symbol shall be black, the hatching shall be red. If the size of the package so requires, the dimensions may be reduced to not less then 100 x 70 high. The rectangular mark 120 x 110 mm dimension may continue to be used. For IATA DGR, the character of the UN numbers shall be at least 12 mm height Handling Labels Cargo Aircraft Only for IATA DGR Minimum dimensions 120 x 110 mm Copyright © www.batteriestransport.org 138
