2.2.6_I_Medium LITHIUM ION BATTERIES PACKED WITH EQUIPMENT (including lithium polymer batteries) Medium batteries regulated UN 3481 Applies to: Lithium ion batteries packed with equipment with a Watt-hour rating in excess of 100 Wh/battery but not more than 300 Wh/battery “Equipment” means device or apparatus for which the lithium cells or batteries will provide electrical power for its operation UN No., Proper Shipping Name UN 3481, LITHIUM ION BATTERIES PACKED WITH EQUIPMENT Class 9 Packing Group Not assigned Hazard Label Labels must be in the form of a square set at an angle of 45° (diamond-shaped) with minimum dimensions of 100 mm by 100 mm; except for air transport mode, labels dimensions may be reduced not less then 30mm by 30mm on small packages. • They must have a line 5 mm inside the edge and running parallel with it. Prerequisite • Batteries must meet the General Requirements of §173.185(a) in particular the test requirements Specific Requirements • Unless shipped via road/rail, each battery incorporates a safety venting device or is designed to preclude a violent rupture under normal conditions of carriage; • Unless shipped via road/rail, each battery is equipped with an effective means of preventing external short circuits • Each battery containing cells or series of cells connected in parallel must be equipped with an effective means, as necessary, to prevent dangerous reverse current flow (e.g. diodes, fuses). • Batteries manufactured after 31 December 2015 must be marked with the Wh rating on the outside case. Transport mode Road Marine Air Passenger Aircraft Cargo Packing instructions 173.185(c) P903 PI 966 section I Lithium ion batteries should be offered for transport at a State of Charge (SoC) ≤ 30 % of their rated capacity • Batteries must be protected against short circuit, including protection against contact with conductive materials within the same packaging which could cause a short circuit. • Batteries must be packed so that are protected against damage caused by the movement or placement of the batteries within the packaging • Equipment must be secured in outer packaging • Package may not contain more batteries than the minimum number required to power the equipment plus two spares • lithium ion batteries must be placed in inner packagings that completely enclose the cell, then placed in an outer packaging. Two possible solutions, lithium ion batteries must: • be placed in inner packagings that completely enclose the battery, then placed in a strong outer packaging; or • be placed in inner packagings that completely enclose the battery, then placed with equipment in a strong outer packaging • Use only approved packaging conforming to Packing Group II performance level, two solutions: • Be completely enclosed in inner packagings, then placed in a UN packaging of the type shown below that meets the Packing Group II performance level, then placed with equipment in a strong, rigid outer packaging: or • Be placed in inner packagings that completely enclose the batteries, then placed with equipment in a packaging that meets the Packing Group II performance level of the type shown below. • Use only approved packaging conforming to Packing Group II performance level. • lithium ion batteries must be placed in inner packagings that completely enclose the cell, then placed in an outer packaging. • complete package must be approved Packing Group II performance level • Restriction: see § 1.9.3 Packagings Strong outer packaging, it must be capable of withstanding a 1.2 m drop test in any orientation without damage to batteries contained therein, without shifting of the contents so as to allow battery to battery contact and without release of contents.
