Must get A88 approval from country of origin and country that certifies the operator Packagings The inner packagings containing the lithium cells or batteries must be placed in one of the following packagings meeting the applicable requirements of part 178 of subchapter C of 49 CFR at the packing group I performance level. A battery or cell with a net mass over 30 kg is limited to one cell or battery per outer package. The following specification packagings are authorized: • Boxes (4A, 4B, 4N, 4C1, 4C2, 4D, 4F, 4H2); • Drums (1A2, 1B2, 1N2, 1D, 1H2). Cells ≥ 12 kg (gross) with a strong, impact resistant outer casing If battery weighs more than 12 kg and is equipped with a strong, impact resistant outer casing, the shipper is excepted from the UN Performance Packaging requirements and may instead ship the battery in a strong outer package, protective enclosures (e.g., crate), or other handling device (e.g., pallet).
