2.5.1 LITHIUM METAL CELLS & BATTERIES UN 3090 PRE-PRODUCTION PROTOTYPES & SMALL PRODUCTION RUNS (≤ 100 cells and batteries ) Applies to: Lithiummetal cells and batteries UN No., Proper Shipping Name UN 3090, LITHIUM METAL BATTERIES Class 9 Packing Group Not assigned Hazard Label Labels must be in the form of a square set at an angle of 45° (diamond-shaped) with minimum dimensions of 100 mm by 100 mm; except for air transport mode, labels dimensions may be reduced not less then 30mm by 30mm on small packages. • They must have a line 5 mm inside the edge and running parallel with it. Prerequisite • Cells and batteries do not need to meet the General Requirements of §173.185(a) in particular the test requirements Specific Requirements • Each cell and battery incorporates a safety venting device or is designed to preclude a violent rupture under normal conditions of carriage; • Each cell and battery is equipped with an effective means of preventing external short circuits • Each battery containing cells or series of cells connected in parallel must be equipped with an effective means, as necessary, to prevent dangerous reverse current flow (e.g. diodes, fuses). Transport mode Road Marine Air Passenger Aircraft Cargo Packing instructions 173.185(e) Forbidden Forbidden The lithium cells or batteries must be individually packed in a non-metallic inner packaging, inside an outer packaging, and be surrounded by non-combustible, nonconductive cushioning material. Cells and batteries must be packaged to prevent effects of shock, vibration, and movement within the package. Must get A88 approval from country of origin and country that certifies the operator Packagings The inner packagings containing the lithium cells or batteries must be placed in one of the following packagings meeting the applicable requirements of part 178 of subchapter C of 49 CFR at the packing group I performance level. A battery or cell with a net mass over 30 kg is limited to one cell or battery per outer package. The following specification packagings are authorized: • Boxes (4A, 4B, 4N, 4C1, 4C2, 4D, 4F, 4H2); • Drums (1A2, 1B2, 1N2, 1D, 1H2). Cells ≥ 12 kg (gross) with a strong, impact resistant outer casing If battery weighs more than 12 kg and is equipped with a strong, impact resistant outer casing, the shipper is excepted from the UN Performance Packaging requirements and may instead ship the battery in a strong outer package, protective enclosures (e.g., crate), or other handling device (e.g., pallet). Large Packaging 173.185(b)(6) Rigid Large packagings, conforming to the packing group I performance level, are authorized for a single battery.: • steel (50A); • aluminium (50B); metal other than steel or aluminium (50N); • rigid plastics (50H); • plywood (50D); Weight limit No limit No limit Marking and Labelling of Packages UN 3090 LITHIUM METAL BATTERIES UN 3090, LITHIUM METAL BATTERIES Overpack: OVERPACK + same labels as above OVERPACK + same labels as above Documents Transport document Transport document 216 Copyright © www.batteriestransport.org
