2.4.1 LITHIUM METAL CELLS & BATTERIES DAMAGED & DEFECTIVE Lithium metal cells and batteries not critical UN 3090 Applies to: Lithium metal cells and batteries UN No., Proper Shipping Name UN 3090, LITHIUM METAL BATTERIES Class 9 Packing Group Not assigned Hazard Label Labels must be in the form of a square set at an angle of 45° (diamond-shaped) with minimum dimensions of 100 mm by 100 mm; except for air transport mode, labels dimensions may be reduced not less then 30mm by 30mm on small packages. • They must have a line 5 mm inside the edge and running parallel with it. Prerequisite • For road transport, cells and batteries need to meet the General Requirements of §173.185(a) in particular the test requirements Specific Requirements • Each cell and battery incorporates a safety venting device or is designed to preclude a violent rupture under normal conditions of carriage; • Each cell and battery is equipped with an effective means of preventing external short circuits • Each battery containing cells or series of cells connected in parallel must be equipped with an effective means, as necessary, to prevent dangerous reverse current flow (e.g. diodes, fuses). • Batteries manufactured after 31 December 2015 must be marked with the Wh rating on the outside case. • Lithium cells or batteries have been damaged or identified by the manufacturer as being defective for safety reasons, that have the potential of producing a dangerous evolution of heat, fire, or short circuit (e.g., those being returned to the manufacturer for safety reasons). Transport mode Road Marine Air Passenger Aircraft Cargo Packing instructions 173.185(f) P908 Forbidden Forbidden The lithium cells or batteries must be individually packed in a non-metallic inner packaging that completely encloses the cell or battery. The inner packaging must be surrounded by noncombustible, electrically non-conductive, and absorbent cushioning material. The cell or battery must be packaged to prevent effects of shock, vibration, and movement within the package. Packagings Each inner packaging must be individually placed in one of the following packagings meeting the applicable requirements of part 178 of subchapter C of 49 CFR at the Packing Group I performance level. The following specification packagings are authorized: • Boxes (4A, 4B, 4N, 4C1, 4C2, 4D, 4F, 4H2); • Drums (1A2, 1B2, 1N2, 1D, 1H2). For a single battery, the following rigid packagings are authorized (50H, 50D, 50A, 50B, 50N (metal packaging must be fitted with non-conductive liner). Cells ≥ 12 kg (gross) with a strong, impact resistant outer casing N/A Large Packaging 173.185(b)(6) LP903 Rigid Large packagings, conforming to the packing group I performance level, are authorized for a single battery.: • steel (50A); • aluminium (50B); metal other than steel or aluminium (50N); • rigid plastics (50H); • plywood (50D); Weight limit No limit No limit Marking and Labelling of Packages UN 3090 LITHIUM METAL BATTERIES DAMAGED/DEFECTIVE LITHIUM METAL BATTERY UN 3090, LITHIUM METAL BATTERIES DAMAGED/DEFECTIVE LITHIUM METAL BATTERY Overpack: OVERPACK + same labels as above OVERPACK + same labels as above Documents Transport document Transport document 208 Copyright © www.batteriestransport.org
